Location: Barstow area. This trip will cover many of the sites we visited in 2024 but with two additions and one subtraction.
On March 29, we will rendezvous at the I-40 Hector Road exit at 9 AM. It's about 3 hours from Fallbrook. We will spend some time at the Hector Road agate site. Pisgah Crater, a fascinating site, is open again (it was locked up last year) . We will visit Lavic Siding for its beautiful jaspers. We'll drive down to Lavic Lake and see the 100,000 year old black volcanic flows in the white silt of Lavic Lake and have lunch. We will then drive over I-40 to the South Cady Mountains for even more jasper. End of Day 1.
Participants may camp out or stay in a Barstow motel.
On March 30, after exiting Calico Road/Exit 194 on I-40 we will rendezvous at the intersection of Mule Canyon Road and Calico Road to visit the silver lace agate site at 8 AM. WARNING: the trip up to the site is very steep. We will then go to Mineola Road and visit a jasper and rhyolite site. We will not visit the wollastonite/marble site this trip. Our last stop, as was the case last year, will be Rainbow Basin north of Barstow.
We will seldom be near fast food locations during the day so pack lunches and water. This is an ability to pick up large amounts of jasper and agate (the silver lace agate, not so much) so bring buckets. Subject to change without notice if get better ideas.
